Virtuality
Fox TV broadcast a new sci-fi pilot this past Friday night called Virtuality and this is my quick review.
Basically the premise is a long haul space mission could not be paid for by the Government therefore it was sponsored by a TV network in exchange for it to be turned into a reality show…something like Big Brother in Space. In addition to this everyone has virtual reality devices to take them into fantasy worlds however someone has infiltrated the program and it turns violent in which the crew have problems turning off.
If the plot sounds a bit far fetched, well, it plays out that way in the program. I suppose it is like a psychological thriller and centers on the strained relationships in the crew. The camera effects, the way it swings around, makes the program look its been filmed by someone with a personal video camera…as is the trend these days, which made it a little bit annoying for me. It isn’t a space thriller like Star Trek and Stargate, it is a drama first. We didn’t really get to see the whole spaceship, just angles from is “cam”. What I am surprised with is how the program had gay characters in it…I mean this was the conservative Fox network!! Mind you the gay guys were cooks, a bit stereotypical maybe!! I am not sure how they would turn this into a 42 minute weekly format if they get the green light to go with a series and I doubt it I would watch it.
From the feedback I have seen on the internet people love it or hate it. I am the later.

Batman and Robin #1
Please be warned, there are some spoilers in the post for those who haven’t read Batman and Robin issue 1.
Firstly I don’t really follow Batman in DC Comics, never been a huge fan, but thought I needed to write something associated with the controversial ‘aparant’ death of Batman this year. Writer Grant Morrison killed Bruce Wayne off at the hands of villain Darkseid as part of the Batman RIP story arc.
The Batman franchise was then ‘relaunched’ under Batman Reborn with the Batman series being written by Judd Winnick (of whom I am a big fan), Batman and Robin being written by Grant Morrison, and the other title Detective Comics will star Batwoman as the main character.
Now, onto Batman and Robin 1. The original Robin is now Batman, Dick Grayson went on to be Nightwing who had his own comic title and was also a member of the Teen Titans. But now in a spooky twist he has become the new Batman. This Batman is certainly less dark than the original, and in fact a better mentor to the new Robin than Bruce Wayne was to Dick, in my opinion. Robin however, has turned into this guy with a very bad attitude who really needs a bit of a telling off. Dick has his hands full.
I was not impressed by the story line. It introduced a new villain called Toad, never heard of him before myself. It would have been good to see a familiar villain. In fact I don’t really have much to say about the story, the villain appearred, committed a naughty, they chased and caught up with him, gave a bit of background to what had happened previously, Commissioner Gordon was wondering where Batman had got to, set up the storyline for the next issue. The artwork was ok, nothing really impressive.
I think my opinion goes against many other reviews I have seen…probably because I am not a big fan. I will likely buy the next issue out of curiousity but I can’t see myself buying it on a regular basis.

Immigration Update
This past week the Uniting American Families Act got its first congressional hearing in its history, this has generated some interest from other legislators and the media. Here is a quick roundup of the most interesting bits.
Firstly the Act has gained new co-sponsors as follows:
House of Representatives - HR1024 - previously 102 now 105 co-sponsors
Senate - S424 - previously 18 now 19
Some news items of interest:
The Family Research Council bigots are obviously stirred by this bit of legislation as they have said they had considerable impact in Washington stating that the bill’s main objective is to undermine marriage. They have said this all along throughout the bill’s history, from what I recall, and they know that it’s not the case - this is the same old BS as they haven’t got a proper defense against it. This is totally nothing to do with marriage.
The story got a lot of media attention including: New York Times, Windy City Times, Advocate, Miami Herald.
Following the rally Don and I were interviewed by various media including CTV, City TV, CBC Radio, two articles on the Xtra website [article 1] and [article 2], radio interview on CITR (which can now be heard on their podcast via iTunes - Queer FM show of May 31st) and on the West Ender website.
Shirley Tan spoke for all of us when she spoke at the congressional hearing.

They are calling it a historical event, for the first time the Uniting American Families Act gets its say in front of a Congressional hearing. This certainly gives a lot of people some hope for the future, that maybe discrimination can be written out of immigration legislation. I personally don’t feel hopeful, following the California Prop 8 decision I am not sure the American public are educated enough to understand the concept of the legislation or of same sex relationships.
The choice of speakers was very good especially Shirley Tan who had won a 2 year reprieve from being thrown out of the country. I feel extremely saddened that she was treated so poorly by immigration authorities and that is how I feel I am treated every time I enter the US - like a criminal. It will be some time before I enter the US again.
What will happen next and what are the time lines? This is a good question that no one can answer. It is possible that UAFA will go into the pot for immigration reform later on in the year, but certainly has numerous hurdles to go through first. Probably the major one in my opinion is the opposition thinking this will set a precedent for recognizing same sex relationships in a federal law conflicting the outcome of DOMA to force same sex marriage to be at the State level (as marriages for straight couples). Even if it does go through it will likely be a couple of years before it becomes set in stone.
The positive part of this is the publicity (CNN / New York Times), this is surely to generate some media interest and raise awareness of the issue. It’s one that not a lot of people know about.
The day before the hearings there was the great news of another co-sponsor in the Senate, Maria Cantwell, this makes the total to 18.
Keep checking the Immigration Equality blog for the latest news. The hearing can be watched again on the Committee on the Judicary website (for a limited time I assume).

Obama and LGBT Pride Month
Today Obama has issued a proclamation stating that June is LGBT Pride Month, download it from the Mile High Gay Guy website. This is very welcome to me because he states, post election, where he stands on various policies - it’s better to know where we stand with him rather than not saying anything and everybody guessing.
He recognizes the Stonewall Riots of New York that took place 40 years ago. It is good that he recognizes the value of LGBT citizens and their contribution towards society. Some of the issues he says he is working on, with the gay community are: decriminalize homosexuality, improving hate crimes legislation, supporting civil unions, and ending Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.
There is no mention of the Uniting American Families Act which is dear to my heart, probably because this is likely to be included in immigration reform later in the year. There is sadly no mention of Defense of Marriage Act. There are still no timelines or action plans for these issues. If he is working with the gay community they are certainly keeping things close to their chest. I can see why marriage wouldn’t be on the top of his agenda, he will probably think that civil union’s are more do-able at this stage. I am concerned that as of today 228 skilled people have been forced to quite the armed forces in the US during Obama’s administration (place a widget on your website courtesy of Servicemembers Legal Defense Network).
Anyway, a positive step in my opinion as the previous administration wouldn’t have gone this far!

Proposition 8
Sadly this week bought the California Supreme Court’s decision to uphold Proposition 8 in their State to put a halt to same sex marriages but to let the existing 18,000 marriages stay in effect. If they were voting to actually keep same sex marriage maybe the decision would have been different but they were voting on the legality of the proposition itself. I agree with the line of thinking that the US needs to come up with a Federal decision on same sex marriage rather than go State by State which is ridiculous.
Don and I attended and spoke at a rally to protest the decision in Morton Park, I spoke about the Uniting American Families Act and Don spoke about Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. There are these and other policies that just need to change quickly to bring equality to LGBT people as promised by Obama.
At and following the rally Don and I were interviewed by a number of Canadian based media including CTV, CityTV, CBC Radio, Xtra, West Ender and so on. The YouTube video below shows raw footage taken by Xtra newspaper of Don and I speaking at the rally, it can also be seen on the Xtra website.
I am very pleased to see so many people speaking out following the Prop 8 decision, it is ridiculous that in 2009 that the US hasn’t progressed in this area. Its main allies and trading partners, also some countries that are considered to be developing countries, have better equality than the US…so its about time it kicked itself into this century. Isn’t it easier on yourselves and more rewarding to love than to continue to find things to hate about people?
This has made me so pleased I am living in Canada!

UAFA Gets Congressional Hearing
Surprising news came this week when Immigration Equality announced a congressional hearing, on June 3rd, for the Uniting American Families Act.
This is the first time in it’s history that this act has had a congressional hearing and it will finally give some hope to the many people who are in limbo because of the current discrimination in immigration law. For us, maybe this is the first step to returning home to Denver. I have been hopeful before but nothing has happened so I am very nervous how this is going to proceed.
A congressional hearing is basically a way to gather information in the early stages of putting together new legislation in the Senate and it does include the opportunity for people to tell their stories. The hearing is documented and can be one of the most important pieces of paper in the legistlative process. I am not sure if the bill will go forward on its own or as suggested by Immigration Equality will be part of the bigger picture that is reform of immigration law.
In other good news there are more co-sponsors who have signed up for UAFA. HR1024 in the House of Representatives has broken the 100 barrier and now has 102 co-sponsors:
Unfortunately there are no new co-sponsors in the Senate, for S424, so the number remains at 17. Nonetheless a good week with hopefully some exciting times ahead.

Proposition 8 Decision on Tuesday
This coming Tuesday the Supreme Court of California will finally make what seems the long-waited decision on Proposition 8. 365gay has a good news article on the background to this, what they are voting for, and what this possibly means to 18,000 couples.
The decision will be followed by Rally’s in many cities in the US and across the world, details can be found on the Day of Decision website. The rally’s will be either a protest or celebration, depending on the outcome of the decision of course.
In Vancouver details of the event can be found on this website, it was take place at Morton Park. There will be discussions on other related LGBT legislation that has not been and should be addressed as a matter of urgency, this includes the Uniting American Families Act, Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and the Defense of Marriage Act. I will be talking about UAFA. We hope to see you all there, please click on the graphic to the left to download details of the event in PDF format and click here to download the Press Release.

Eurovision Violence
Thought I would just follow up on my post the other day about Eurovision and the possibility of Russian authorities causing trouble for activists who wanted to highlight the countries poor human rights records towards gay people.
Behind the well orchestrated Eurovision event that the general public saw on TV was the evil of the Russian authorities when they violently whisked away 30 activists from peaceful protest including British supporter Peter Thatchell. In a way it was good that this happened because it did highlight to the world how backward the country is. To coincide with the gay rally there was an anti-gay one as well and that was left to get on with it, how come? The anti-gay demonstrators have been very violent to the gay community and the police do very little about it as though they are supporting them. They deny a peaceful rally by gay activists but they let the anti-gay protesters spread their hate and violence.
Its really sad that none of the countries attending or passing their votes did not say anything about these policies. Sometimes an event like this isn’t really the time and place to protest but let us not forget that Eurovision is one of the biggest gay events on the calendar.
Aside from all of this the event was actually quite awful as usual, really not that interested in watching it at all. Almost 40 countries had to vote for their favorite countries and the length of that was like pulling teeth! Sigh! Norway won…and really I thought they were pretty awful, the UK had a far better act.

Star Trek Review
This is my review of the new Star Trek movie, like hundreds of other people sharing their comments over the internet through twitter, forum’s and their blogs I thought I would do the same too.
It certainly did have a different look and feel compared to most other Star Trek’s, the graphics, camera movements, usage of special effects, and so on. It was an all-action thrill ride from start to finish, like a roller coaster of fighting, laser guns, explosions and near death edge of your seat moments.
There are a couple of things that I would have changed in the movie…
Keep the story line in the same reality/time line as the original Star Trek. Now I am not sure if history has been changed and everything that has taken place through all the Star Trek programs and films has been wiped clean, or this is an alternate reality that has been created. Where are they going with this and what will they do next? How does this fit in with a possible TV program? I always thought Star Trek to be a TV based show rather than a film one.
There wasn’t much story line in this film. To me Star Trek was facing 20th or 21st Century issues and putting them in the context of a Sci-Fi TV program so it would get the audience thinking things. I didn’t really see any of this in this Star Trek. Also, there was minimal character development and this has been achieved really well in the other films and TV programs because they had more time for chatter rather than fighting or blowing people up.
So all in all I would give it a 7/10, not my favorite Star Trek but it certainly won’t put me off watching more.
A better review (better analysis) can be found at my friend Robin’s blog called Bloginhood, thanks for the invite Robin to join you, Phoebe and your mates to go and see it.

Eurovision
Never really been into Eurovision, I can hardly bring myself to observe it from afar because it is simply so dreadful. The one good thing about being in Canada is that I cannot see that is going to broadcast here - YES!
Is it dreadful because it was previously hosted by Terry Wogan with his dry sarcastic witty commentary? Well, that is a part of it but I think its mainly because of the poor songs and I have never really warmed to any act. This year is the first time for Graham Norton to host the event, he is just as annoying as Terry Wogan so the commentary cannot get better or worse!
Well this year, because the host city is Moscow, this has caused some difficulties for gay people [source: The Guardian]. The Slavic Gay Pride which is planned for the final day of Eurovision was supposedly banned by Moscow’s idiot Mayor but I expect it will go ahead. It looks as though the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Diplomatic Service) is expecting some problems since it has updated its Russia Travel Warning page. The UK Gay News has a good timeline of what is happening regarding this subject. UK Gay lobbyist and activist Peter Tatchell will be in Moscow for the events, well, he certainly is brave because I wouldn’t want to go! Many eyes are on Moscow this weekend, especially as the Olympics will be held there, so we’ll see what happens.

Vancouver Restaurant Reviews
dinehere.ca seems to be the place for getting reviews on Vancouver restaurants so I have signed up and started placing my thoughts on there too. Go to my profile to see my reviews.
The restaurants I like the most so far is one in our neighborhood which is called Loks, quite expensive but good Chinese food. I am quite surprised by the quality of dinning in Vancouver as I didn’t think it would be able to compete with London. There is a heavy influence on Chinese and Asian related cuisine but I have experienced that many of those restaurants have a fairly ambitious menu for westernized taste buds like mine.

Missed Free Comic Book Day!
Well I seem to miss Free Comic Book Day every year and I don’t know why, I guess other stuff happens. Lucky for me there has always been something to pick up either the Thursday (in the UK) or Wednesday (in North America) after the actual event.
This year I was able to pick up Avengers from Golden Age Collectibles in downtown Vancouver.
The premise of the story is a team up between Thor, Avengers and the Dark Avengers to combat a common threat. To me this comic was a very good introduction to the Dark Reign story arc in the Marvel universe of comics. Marvel had dusted off some of their regulars to write and draw the story. Brian Michael Bendis wrote the story with the artistic talents of Jimmy Cheung, both of which are working on Avengers: Illuminati.
One of the best things about the comic is the price - yes, it was free. Being smaller than the usual size of American comics was a little dissapointing because it can get lost in my comic boxes like that. The story was ok, not aimed at mature audiences, nothing breathtaking or earth shattering, the story was sound though but main a punch up. The artwork was excellent, tons of stuff going on in every frame and it was worth the money just for that.

US Immigration Reform in 2009?
Well I am not holding my breath and even if it does come would they include the interests of same sex binational couples? The chair of the Senate Sub-Committee on Immigration has stated however that there would be Immigration Reform within the year [source: Daily News]. It will be interesting to see this one develops and a reminder to us all to keep on campaigning at this important time.
The UAFA has seen some further co-sponsors since I last wrote about this. In the House of Representatives HR1024 the number of co-sponsors has risen to 98, that is 2, thanks to Steve Israel of New Yorks 2nd District and Bobby Rush of Illinois’s 1st District. Unfortunately there has been no change in the Senate which stands at 17.

Same Sex Marriage
Canada was the fourth country in the world to recognize same sex marriage which came into effect nationally on July 20th, 2005. Unfortunately very few countries have made wise decisions and gone down this path.
In my own country UK Civil Partnerships were introduced in December 2005 but unfortunately marriage was rejected on 31 July 2006. A Canadian couple who were married in their home country tried to sue the British Government for not recognizing their marriage in the UK i.e. they were demoted to a Civil Partnership.
The US has some along a little bit but Same Sex marriage is not a federal law - how ridiculous is that??!! Same sex marriage is currently recognized by Massachusetts, Connecticut and Iowa with two other States coming on board in September, that is Vermont and Maine. Currently same sex marriage in California is under dispute with regard to the Proposition 8 campaign.
When Same Sex Marriage was approved to go ahead in Maine the Governor, John E Baldacci, who had previously stated that he wasn’t in favor of Gay Marriage, made this heart felt speech:
“I have followed closely the debate on this issue. I have listened to both sides, as they have presented their arguments during the public hearing and on the floor of the Maine Senate and the House of Representatives. I have read many of the notes and letters sent to my office, and I have weighed my decision carefully,” Baldacci said in a release. “I did not come to this decision lightly or in haste.”
“I appreciate the tone brought to this debate by both sides of the issue,” Baldacci said. “This is an emotional issue that touches deeply many of our most important ideals and traditions. There are good, earnest and honest people on both sides of the question.”
“In the past, I opposed gay marriage while supporting the idea of civil unions,” Baldacci said. “I have come to believe that this is a question of fairness and of equal protection under the law, and that a civil union is not equal to civil marriage.”
“Article I in the Maine Constitution states that ‘no person shall be deprived of life, liberty or property without due process of law, nor be denied the equal protection of the laws, nor be denied the enjoyment of that person’s civil rights or be discriminated against.’”
“This new law does not force any religion to recognize a marriage that falls outside of its beliefs. It does not require the church to perform any ceremony with which it disagrees. Instead, it reaffirms the separation of Church and State,” Baldacci said.
“It guarantees that Maine citizens will be treated equally under Maine’s civil marriage laws, and that is the responsibility of government.”

McHappy Day - Give Direct to the Charities!
Quite befuddled why people would want to buy a McDonalds in order to benefit Children’s Charities. McHappy is May 6th here in Canada in which McDonalds will donate just $1 for every Big Mac, Happy Meal or McMuffin (and maybe other disgusting so-called food items) that are sold.
I don’t think McDonalds marketing machine goes into such a venture out of the kindness of their hearts, there is a lot of free marketing and customer loyalty that comes there way. Aside from their own marketing they are getting free publicity from the press, charities running promotions, people mentioning it their blogs and so on. The one good thing that comes out of it is raising awareness that these charities exist and need money.
I would recommend to people that they give up their McDonalds for the day and give not only what they would pay for their disgusting burger (or whatever) straight to the Childrens charity plus a dollar more. Everyone would feel much better because they have not only given up an unhealthy meal for the day but also raised more money for these deserving causes.

Twitter Craze
Filed Under General, On The Web
Guess it had to come sooner or later that I would write something about Twitter, everyone else is and joining the craze too. Many people are using it such as dogs, cats, famous people, journalists, news channels, and many others.
So, why am I using Twitter? It is like an evolution to Facebook, where I would leave a status message there for my friends I can now leave a message for my followers. Facebook tends to be for immediate friends but Twitter can be for anyone, from my point of view. Whether it be a friend, relative, business acquantaince, company or non-profit. I find it really interesting to find out what certain people are doing, it’s like a security blanket that frequently tells you that they are there and doing ok.
So the advantages for me is to keep in touch with people when I am on the move or at home, if someone is working on something and they promote it through Twitter it is like I have the opportunity to input into it too.
The disadvantages is that some people will talk too much about their day to day routine which is boring if repeated time and time again. I have noticed some web developers just continually post links to articles on the internet which becomes too laborous to keep up with and I get bored of them. Also, I get quite a few spam followers whom I block as soon as I can - a lot of them selling services to entrepreneurs…very tedious. I have noticed that I don’t get as many email’s as I used to and really don’t like getting a 140 character message on Twitter or message through Facebook.

Uniting American Families Act has received one more co-sponsor this week, on April 23rd.
Adam Smith, Democrat of Washington became the 96th co-sponsor in the House of Representatives, Bill HR1024.
Unfortunately there has been no change in the Senate since March, number of co-sponsors standing at 17, Bill S424.
I would have thought, will the media attention that the proposed Act has been receiving lately there would be more sponsorship - so get a move on you legislators!!!

Couple Saved From Deportation…
…well, at least for now.
My blog entry dated April 1st spoke about a Lesbian bi-national couple who have been in a relationship for 23 years but the foreign partner faced deportation back to her home country. This is a very prominent case since it appeared in People magazine.
Yesterday, a private Senate bill, introduced by Diane Feinstein, is keeping the couple together until then end of this Congress session in December 2010. This has been reported on numerous websites including 365 Gay, Immigration Equality Blog. I wonder if this has set a precedence for other couples in similar situations? What is going to happen now to pass this law? How much longer do couples have to live in fear of being separated by who they love?
Below is an interesting video explaining what UAFA means.

Peaking Through Our Bedroom Window
There is quite a stir in the UK at the moment regarding the launch of Google Street View which went live in March.
The BBC has been reporting stores such has how Google has pulled some pictures however they still remain online by viewing them at a different angle [source], and how some residents are challenging the Google van taking pictures [source].
Well, I thought I would check out our previous residence and to my surprise you can zoom in to look inside our kitchen and living room window. Since we are not living there any more it doesn’t bother me too much but could be potentially embarrassing since it looks as though it was filmed before we left. Also in our area you can clearly see some geezers face - I blanked it.

So when is Google Street View coming to Canada? According to this CBC report pretty soon, we’ll see what the Canadian reaction to it is!

Outdated Immigration Laws Break Up Families
Filed Under Gay, Immigration
Here is yet another sad story about how US Immigration have split up a couple who have been in a 23 year relationship, as there are also children involved this is a very devestating story.
Read the story on 8Asians.com
The Uniting American Families Act is one possible hope for couples like this, however this has come too late for them. Following is the status of the UAFA and the latest co-sponsors:
House of Reps: 93 co-sponsors - HR1024
Senate: 17 co-sponsors - S424
Quite a poor response so far and we need more co-sponsors for this to be taken more seriously.

When traveling on the tube in London there is no way you can get a signal unless you are on an overground part of the network. This can be annoying for some people if you have an urgent call to make especially if your service is delayed and you are meeting up with someone. I found it very amusing when I saw MANY people get really frustrated when their signal cut out inside the tunnel - well, its pretty obvious what would happen!
Vancouver doesn’t seem to have that problem. I seem to be able to get a signal even inside the tunnel parts of the Skytrain network for example at Granville where I stop off twice a day. At first I thought this would be annoying when people would take advantage of being able to use their cell service. However, I don’t see many people using their cell phones at all. Sure, I have seen the odd person shouting their head off talking about stupid things like who is dating whom, what is on TV tonight, and how their embarrasing medical condition has flared up again…but this is very few and far between.
Other larger cities I have been to haven’t had good service on their subway systems such as London, Paris and New York. I think people are more polite in Paris and New York but in London it could become a bit of an issue.
This article was inspired by two stories I read today:

Still can’t believe that the Pope is continuing his policies against Condom’s saying that they have no place in the fight against HIV/AIDS. While on a visit to Africa he is speaking openly for the first time of his views on Condom’s.
If he thinks that people are going to stop having sex he is completely off his tiny little mind…it’s what human’s do!! Not having sex is one answer to stop the virus spreading but I’m afraid it’s not going to happen.
He is dangerous because there are a lot of naive people out there who believes everything he says. He is just like a politician, not to be trusted.
